What is the Internet?

The internet is a vast global network that connects millions of computers and devices, allowing them to communicate and share information. It’s like a massive web of roads connecting cities. Each website, app, or online service is like a building along those roads. Without these roads (the internet), the buildings (websites and services) wouldn’t be able to connect.

The internet enables:

• Web browsing (visiting websites and searching for information)

• Email communication

• Online shopping

• Streaming videos and music

• Social media interactions

• Cloud computing and remote work

Is Google the Internet? No!

Many people think Google is the internet because they use it to search for everything, but Google is a search engine—a tool that helps you find websites and information on the internet.

To put it simply:

• The internet is the entire system of connected computers and websites.

• Google is just a directory that helps you find websites.

• Websites like Facebook, YouTube, and Wikipedia exist on the internet but are not the internet itself.

Other Platforms That Are Not the Internet

Apart from Google, there are many other platforms that people confuse with the internet:

• Facebook: A social media platform where people connect and share content.

• YouTube: A video-sharing platform that hosts content but is not the entire internet.

• WhatsApp & Email Services: Communication tools that use the internet but do not define it.

• Online Banking & E-Commerce: Websites that offer financial and shopping services through the internet.

How Do We Access the Internet?

To use the internet, you need:

1. An Internet Service Provider (ISP): Companies like Telkom, Vodacom, or MTN provide internet access.

2. A Device: A computer, smartphone, or tablet.

3. A Web Browser or App: Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge allow you to navigate websites, while apps connect you to online services.
